Catch us the foxes,
The little foxes that spoil the vines,
For our vines have tender grapes.
The Lord calls to me; to leave the comfort zone. He is calling me higher into obedience to His word. The romance of a life of devotion is becoming real; as the rubber meets the road, so to speak. God desires a whole yes in my heart for Him.
A desperate plea for help is heard; “Catch us the foxes.” These foxes are small, yet destructive. They are areas of compromise; subtle yet effective at dulling the heart.
The Faxes spoil the vines. This makes me think of John 15, where Jesus describes pruning the branches. The branches in our hearts that He cuts away are those that have been spoiled by sin and compromise. We ask that He not only help us in getting rid of compromise; but also that He would remove the dead things that there may be room for new life in our hearts.
These vines have fruit that are tender; not yet matured. The fruits of righteousness are tender as they are maturing in our lives. Our Holy resolve to say yes to Jesus is strengthened in time. The process of maturing builds history and trust with God. This has been true for my life. Areas of temptation and trial that would shake me in my early years no longer impact the same. I still stumble in certain areas, but I am quicker to get back up. I have to be mindful of what the Lord is doing in my heart. As He is bringing forth new life; there is budding fruit that should be diligently guarded, for they are sensitive while being developed.
“Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it.” -Proverbs 4:23
Righty does the Shulamite humble herself and cry out for help. This is the biggest take away for me in this verse. I cannot fix myself, I will make it worse. I need God to help me. And this He is more than willing to do. As we will see, His way does not always look like how we think it will; but His leadership is perfect. He is maturing us in love; building us up to be strong and victorious, fully leaning into Him.
