Finding Rest in the Finished Work of the Cross (Song of Songs 2:3)

Like an apple tree among the trees of the woods,
So is my beloved among the sons.
I sat down in his shade with great delight,
And his fruit was sweet to my taste.

Jesus is my Beloved and He is like an apple tree among the trees of the woods. He stands out among them all. There is no one like Him! He is perfect and beautiful; all together lovely! Sitting in His presence is unlike any other.

Jesus hung on a tree. This one act of sacrifice transcends eternity as the Lamb of God declares “it is finished.” The fruit of an apple tree is low hanging fruit; it is in reach. God came low in becoming a man, to be accessible to humanity. In Christ’s humanity we can see, touch, feel, and interact with God. And through His cross we are cleansed and justified. The fruit of His cross is Eternal life in Christ that is available today.

We can find rest in the finished work of His cross and delight in the knowledge of God. We don’t have to work for His love and affection; He gives of Himself freely. We can cease from striving and let God lead us. The imagery here always directs my thoughts to Psalm 23:1-3::

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.

In every season and in every moment we can find rest in the presence of God. Under His shade we are reminded of His benefits.

Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. -Psalm 103:1-5
