The Day of the Lord pt. 1 (Both Great and Terrible)

Throughout history, humanity has debated this question: will the world continue to get worse or will things get better? All Christians can agree on the promise of heaven coming to earth: that all things will get even better than anyone could imagine. We really will have a happily ever after when Jesus comes back.

And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” -Revelation 21:4

Many Christians have opposing views concerning the period of time right before Jesus comes back. Some teachers insist that there will be mostly a positive trend of events leading to His coming, others teach mostly of a negative train of events. So what does the Bible really say? After taking a serious look at the Word, I am convinced that there will be both positive and negative trends before Jesus returns.

The generation that sees the second coming of Jesus will be in the midst of the “great and terrible day of the Lord.” It is great because the church will be walking in unprecedented glory and power. It is terrible because sin will be allowed to mature and culminate in a global power led by the Antichrist. God will pour out His judgements upon this system in a three and a half year period of time.

11For the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; who can endure it? -Joel 2:11

Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. -Malachi 4:5

For the primary passages in the Old and New Testaments, see Isa. 2:10-22; 4:1-6; 11:1-15; 13:6- 9; Ezek. 13:5; 30:3; Joel 1:15; 2:1, 11, 31; 3:14; Amos 5:18-20; Obad. 15; Zeph. l:7, 12, 14-18, 20; Zech. 14:1-4; Mal. 4:5; 1 Thes. 5:2-3; 2 Thes. 2:2-3; 2 Pet. 3:10; Rev. 6:17.

It will be a time when both the wheat and the tares will have reached their full maturity.

….. 25 but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. 26 But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. ……… 37 He answered and said to them: “He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one. 39 The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels. 40 Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age. Matthew 13:24-30, 37-40

The Lord is going to allow sin to reach full maturity on the earth and will use the pressures that come to purify His church.

….. but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits. And those of the people who understand shall instruct many; yet for many days they shall fall by sword and flame, by captivity and plundering. Now when they fall, they shall be aided with a little help; but many shall join with them by intrigue. And some of those of understanding shall fall, to refine them, purify them, and make them white, until the time of the end; because it is still for the appointed time…… Those who are wise shall shine Like the brightness of the firmament, And those who turn many to righteousness Like the stars forever and ever. -Daniel 11:32-35; 12:3

It will be in the midst of the darkest hour of human history that the Church will shine brightly. The Lord will shine through His people; drawing the nations to Himself. In the midst of the darkness will be the biggest revival the world has ever seen. Though many will fall away (Mt. 24:9-13; 2 Thes. 2:3; 1 Tim. 4:1-2; 2 Tim. 3:1-7; 4:3-4; 2 Pet. 2:1-3), I believe that we will also see more souls give their lives to the Lord in one time period than in any generation before us.

Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And deep darkness the people; But the Lord will arise over you, And His glory will be seen upon you. The Gentiles shall come to your light, And kings to the brightness of your rising. -Isaiah 60:1-3

The Church will be walking in her identity as a Bride in the midnight hour; when the bridegroom returns.

“And at midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’ Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. -Matthew 25:6-7

Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. -Revelation 19:7-8

17 And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” -Revelation 22:17a
