Discovering Jesus Through Vulnerability in Community (Song of Songs 1:7)

Tell me, O you whom I love, Where you feed your flock, Where you make it rest at noon. For why should I be as one who veils herself By the flocks of your companions?

In the search for Jesus, the hungry heart always discovers that He is among His people. Jesus is the “Good Shephard” and He walks closely with His sheep. So it is in community that we find Jesus. It is in doing life among followers of Jesus that we are fed by Him.

To remove the veil is to walk in vulnerability. In order to grow in relationship with Jesus, it is necessary to be open with where we are in the process of maturing. Previously we saw that the Shulamite was darkened from the world. Many of us come to church wearing veils to hide our brokenness; in shame we build false images of ourselves and put up masks. This gets exhausting and hinders us from experiencing the fullness of Jesus. The Shulamite recognizes that Jesus is the good shepherd; that He can be trusted with her tender and broken heart in the process. She is so consumed by desire for Him that she is willing to let down the mask.

It is in the context of community that we begin and continue to grow in Lord. I have seen many who are awakened to the love of Jesus, but because they refuse to engage in community, they don’t grow in authority or depths of intimacy with Jesus. It is true for my life and I believe it to be true of anyone’s journey. We need one another; and it is impossible to love Jesus apart from walking out loving our brothers and sisters.
